Here’s Why Everyone Should Learn To Write by Hand

Even though we are in a technological world, we still use handwriting. It is a form of written communication to express our ideas and thoughts. Handwriting is very important in all of our lives even in adulthood. As an adult, there's nothing better than getting a handwritten card or note from someone who you care about.

Like spelling, grammar, and phonics, handwriting is a support skill that helps build a strong foundation for student success. Studies have shown that if you use handwriting versus keyboarding, you may actually remember the information better in handwriting. Many students are going through the school system with handwriting that is very difficult to read. With all the concentration in schools to prepare for state tests, sometimes there is limited time available to work on improving handwriting.

Elementary School

  1. If the teacher is unable to read the student's writing, their work will be marked wrong or they will be asked to complete the work all over again. This can lead to decreased self-esteem and stress for your child.
  2. Students in elementary school are sometimes given worksheets to complete. Ask me how Assistive Technology can help to make the student's work more legible on a worksheet!
  3. Can your child read the handwritten note you left for them to read on the counter if you wrote in cursive? I can help!
  4. Get a headstart on keyboarding or typing skills for state tests and class projects. We offer keyboarding or typing classes too.

Middle School

Many students now have access to computers or other type of keyboard in Middle School. Is your child proficient with typing? Can your child keep up with note-taking? Can they complete worksheets legibly?

High School

Your child will need to know how to keyboard in high school well to keep up with note-taking and papers that are due. Does your child know how to sign his/her name in cursive? Do they need assistive technology to help with note-taking or reading?

Good Handwriting

Depends on a student's pencil grip, eye-hand coordination, visual perception ability, visual-motor integration skills, and posture are all components of good handwriting. Sometimes students require more intense assistance to develop the skills necessary for legible handwriting. We can help!
